proyecto-circlesOn 27 April our IATA-CSIC research group attended the annual consortium meeting of the European project CIRCLES: Control of microbiome circulation to improve food systems, part of the Horizon 2020 Programme of the European Union. Due to the current situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, this year the meeting was held in an online format.

Under this exceptional situation, and after 30 months of research and work, an extension of 1 year has been granted to continue working on this European research project.

The items discussed at this annual meeting were as follows:

  • Update on the status of sampling in different systems: farms, crops and aquaculture (the latter is the only one in which the CSIC participates)
  • In aquaculture we already have a large biobank of salmon samples (more than 1000 samples from Ireland, UK and Norway) and sea bream (more than 800 samples from Italy, Greece and Spain)
  • As development cycles in aquaculture are longer than in other systems studied, and due to delays due to the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, sampling will end a year later than planned (early-mid 2022)
  • The plan is to start DNA extractions to sequence samples taken throughout fish development as soon as possible, as this information should be used to design microbiota intervention strategies to improve the development, productivity and sustainability of these aquaculture systems
